From the time of the Buddha, the Monastic Sangha has been sustained through the kindness and generosity of good-hearted people offering the four requisites of food, shelter, cloth, and medicine. It is both a significant and joyful occasion acknowledging the relationship of friendship and mutual support between the lay people and the monastics. The Kaṭhina ceremony is also an opportunity to join in the stream of blessings.
This year, KBV's kathina committee is raising funds for improvements to the new forest hermitage. This space was generously offered in order for the KBV community to spend time deepening their practice in a peaceful natural setting conducive to meditation and contemplation--just as the Buddha prescribed. Aside from the water system, generator and solar panel improvements, we would like to eventually build platforms for camping tents, kutis, and a main yurt for residents to practice in. Please see our web page for more information on the property.
Also, we are searching for commercial property for a meditation center in the South Bay, in order to continue to provide practice programs, spiritual counselling, and dana opportunities to the community in a conveniently accessible location. This new venture will also be supported by your offerings at this time.
Bhikkhunis will be joining us from Aloka Vihara Forest Monastery in Placerville, CA, Deer Park Learning Center in Colorado Springs, Dhammadharini Monastery in Penngrove, CA, and from a small hermitage in Tennessee.
You're welcome to join us for any part of the event. See our Tradition of Kathina page for more information.
