In the Spirit of Cāga: A Vital Addition to the Hermitage
Lay practitioners from the Bay Area community, and more recently around the world, have greatly benefited from our relationship with the bhikkhunis at Karuna Buddhist Vihara. The sangha’s reach is evident to community members who are regular participants; in fact, there are now in-person programs available to multiple regions in the Bay Area and the United States, and online programs available worldwide. All of this has been made possible by the hard work of the sangha, and its grassroots supporters. Our gratitude to the bhikkhunis, for their practice and teachings of true dhamma, can’t be overstated.
Over past years, the lay community has witnessed the difficult and noble effort to establish a Theravada sangha in the West, and many have helped it thrive by generously contributing to KBV since its founding in 2012. In this spirit of cāga (generosity and virtuous giving), a small number of lay supporters is working to add a vital facility to the KBV hermitage: a forest shrine kuti.
This project is unique in that its primary purpose will be to serve the bhikkhunis’ own practice. Our vision is of a structure suitable for puja and meditation, with a new Buddha statue included. In addition, it can be used for programs when visitors are at the hermitage.
Some details, such as the structure’s exact location and the amenities we’ll be able to include, have been discussed but not finalized. However, we have until the beginning of 2026 to raise the funds needed for the project while they are decided. If you're interested in participating, please contact me at the email below.
In gratitude,
Philip Chui
