Almsgiving after the Rains

The 2017 Almsgiving Committee is honored to offer the robe cloth and requisites to the monastic sangha at Karuna Buddhist Vihara. The ceremony will be on Sunday, November 5th.

Each year since the time of the Buddha, at the end of the three-month Rains Retreat, the lay community gathers to celebrate the completion of the retreat and to offer to the monastic community gifts of cloth and supplies that will be useful for the coming year. This 2,500-year-old tradition is still carried on here in the West in the Theravadan monasteries. It is initiated by a lay supporter or a group of supporters who offer to organize the preparation and formal offerings. It is an auspicious and joyful occasion acknowledging the relationship of friendship and mutual support between the lay community and the monastics.

This year dana will be dedicated to the new Expansion Fund. The intention is to find a new home for the growing vihara that can accommodate 3 or 4 nuns as residents and 25 meditators in the shrine room, still located in or around Mountain View.

We hope you can join us for the ceremony. For details about the event and on how you can get involved, even if you can't attend, click here.
Yours in Dhamma,
